U.S. bill seeks to rescue faltering newspapers
Well, here’s a bit of straw grasping for newspapers.
“Cardin’s Newspaper Revitalization Act would allow newspapers to operate as nonprofits for educational purposes under the U.S. tax code, giving them a similar status to public broadcasting companies.
Cardin’s office said his bill was aimed at preserving local and community newspapers, not conglomerates which may also own radio and TV stations. His bill would also let a non-profit buy newspapers owned by a conglomerate.”
Not sure how I feel about this, of course, it really comes down to which newspapers provide the news that you can’t get nationally, which would be local and community papers, which I think would benefit from such a bill. As long as they reduce the ridiculous expected profit margins. What do you think?
